SUMMARY: It is the responsibility of the Tactical Officer (TO) for each barracks to ensure the safety and well being of the cadets under their control when they are not directly under the supervision of another staff or faculty advisor. The TO will also assume the responsibility to supervise the cadet staff in their fulfillment of the duties for the day to day running of the company. They will reinforce military procedures as taught in the Junior ROTC classes and by the Military Department. The TO is responsible for the actions taken within their companies by either themselves or the company staff toward other cadets.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Instruct all cadets in the performance of their duties.
2. Supervise and monitor the interaction of cadets in the company and other areas
when not under another faculty member’s supervision.
Manage cadet allowances.
Supervise cadets during study hall to provide maximum study time and maintain
conditions to promote good study habits.
Supervise cadets at social functions.
Establish and maintain a fair and just disciplinary system within the cadet company in accordance with the HMS Rules and Regulations. Assist in
the administration of the in-school suspension program as assigned by
the Commandant.
Establish and maintain good living conditions in the barracks and insure barracks regulations are strictly enforced.
Maintain good communications with the parents/guardians and be knowledgeable about the conduct and academic achievement of each assigned cadet.
Counsel cadets in military, social and personal activities and refer the cadets, when applicable, to other persons for professional guidance.
10. Set the example for all cadets in the development of character.
11. Assume the responsibilities of Duty Tactical Officer as scheduled.
12. Transport cadets to medical facilities and as directed by the Commandant or
his representative.
13. Keep abreast of academic progress of the company and respond to requests
from masters for individual help.
14. Conduct intramural activities with cadets as prescribed by the Athletic Director
or Commandant.
15. Perform weekly inspections of the material condition of every room in the
barracks. Make reports of damages or other discrepancies to the Commandant
and Director of Maintenance.
16. Supervise Maintenance Department employees while working in the barracks to
insure work is properly completed.
17. Attend, and actively participate, in all assigned training.
18. Perform any other duties assigned by the Superintendent or Commandant.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: All cadets for which responsibility is assigned, including female cadets when appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS: Military retired E-6 or above preferred. Be able to communicate well with young people and parents/guardians. Be a leader of sound moral character at all times. Must be able to effectively use a personal computer.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: College education is desirable; experience working with adolescents is mandatory.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES AND REGISTRATION: A valid state driver’s license is required. A commercial driver’s license is desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be in good physical condition to meet a heavy schedule over long hours daily.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Will reside in the quarters provided within the barracks during assigned time of duty. An apartment and utilities will be provided for the
Tactical Officer and family. Works on winter and summer campuses. The function is performed primarily at night and on weekends. Howe Military School is a nonsmoking work environment.
