at the parade, Cadet Anthony Wicks was awarded LTC TOM PEARLMAN, ’51 Saber.
This saber belonged to Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Tom Pearlman,
Class of 1951 and it will be carried during Alumni Weekend through
Commencement Weekend by the cadet officer who represents dedication,

Cadets Willits and Collins
compete in Drug and Alcohol Quiz Bowl
On Saturday morning, Mrs. Ortmann and Mr.
Majewski
traveled to Maplewood Nature Center
with Cadets Tavian Willits and Trayton Collins. These two individuals
represented Howe in the 3rd Annual LaGrange County Drug and
Alcohol Quiz bowl sponsored by Drug Free LaGrange County. Tavian did
not have any competition and advanced automatically to the next round.
Trayton had some competition from a student from Westview. In the end,
Trayton emerged victorious and also advanced. Both of these cadets will
be representing LaGrange County at the regional bowl at the Fort Wayne
Allen County Public Library on Saturday May 17. When you see them,
please congratulate them on a job well done!

Raider
candidates take the outdoor challenge at Summer Camp
On April 26th, the raiders challenged themselves with the
final test. The individuals who took part in this challenging activity
were McLallin A, Gregg, Shen, Lopez, Sopko, Workman, Hall, Woo, and were
led by Raider Commander Tony Wicks and his staff comprised of Tipper,
McLaren, Weidner, Bedke, Wallwork, Englund, and their medic, Bradley.
First, the candidates and raider leaders performed at the repel tower,
which is an exercise where you climb up a ladder and use your feet to
repel down a bored using a rope to hold yourself up. Afterwards, they
marched to the Howe summer camp in staggered position. Once they
arrived, they faced the zip line which is where you are harnessed to a
hope and slide from one standing point in a tree to another. Then it
was time for one of the hardest challenges, tying a rope from one tree
over a river to another and pulling yourself across. Although, this may
not sound so difficult, the rope sinks with more of your weight on it,
and once your half way there, you then have to pull yourself up using
only your own body strength and the rope. The cadets then cooked out
over a bonfire before they eventually had to march back to Howe. At
about 3:00am when they finally did, the next step was to complete a
fitness test which includes pushups, sit-ups, shuffle run, sit and
reach, and the mile. Each individual had their own standards of how they
had to perform depending on their age and gender. The raiders program is
a hard and challenging, self-discipline routine, however; it exemplifies
and builds your pride, physical and mental strength, and confidence
seeing how most of the candidates got farther then they thought they
would.

NJHS and
Lower School Leo Club members help clean roadside
On Saturday, members of the National
Junior Honor Society and Lower
School Leo Club took part in the roadside cleanup sponsored by the
Howe Lion’s Club. Each year, the local Lion’s Club members pledge
to clean the roadside the two mile from campus to the state line.
Even though they braved chilly weather, these cadets painstakingly
worked both side of the road picking up any trash they found.
Everyone had fun despite the task. This opportunity fulfilled the
missions of both the NJHS and Leo Club. NJHS members pledge
community service hours as part of their membership. Likewise, the
Leo Club, sponsored by the local Lion’s Club, has a motto of We
Serve.

Bishop Little
visits Howe and conducts conformation service
On Tuesday, April 22nd, our president
of the Board of Trustees, Bishop Little, came to
visit Howe and conducted a conformation service
at an evening service in All Saints Chapel.
Before the service Bishop Little dined with the
cadets. Bishop Little sat at a table with those
being confirmed and their parents. During breaks
in the conversation with the confirmans Bishop
Little mingled with the corp. After dinner,
Bishop Little celebrated the sacrament of
conformation assisted by the Arch Deacon The
Venerable Douglass and the School Chaplain The
Reverend Yaw. The corps was joined by members
of St Marks Parish and some of Howe’s’ faculty
and staff. Three of our very own cadets were
confirmed; Dj VanOrden, Ben Robbins, and Hunter
Osenbaugh. Because conformation is a sacrament
of the church that celebrates the public
affirmation of their faith and commitment to the
responsibilities of their Baptism in the
presence of the Bishop and to receive the laying
on of hands the clergy wore red vestments. The
bright red of the vestments symbolizes the blood
of the martyrs as well as the Power of the Holy
Sprit. Red is the color of the tongues of fire
which descended from heaven upon the disciples
during Pentecost. It was great to see the high
spirits of our cadets during the visit of Bishop
Little and we would hope that he can visit with
us more often.

Chapel service
held with a theme from the "we" in Howe
On April 18th,
our daily chapel service was held with a
different theme. The “We” in Howe, encourages
every individual to stand out whether it be with
their religion, race, etc. Friday night’s
service was held with a Jewish theme hosted by
two of our Jewish cadets, Cadet Reid-Watkins and
cadet Flashier. They took turns reading Hebrew
but it was the last thing from boring; we were
clapping our hands and stomping our feet to make
a beat while she sang z’mrot, the “Hebrew
songs”. It was held on Friday night as the
beginning of the Sabat. The Jewish Sabbath is a
holy time held from Friday night to Saturday
morning which is called “Shabbat.” After the
ceremony, many of the cadets asked if we could
hold another Jewish service. It was a nice
change to see, and it was fun seeing everyone
involved.
Soldiers
Receive Much Needed Items From the 5th
Grade by
Mrs. Ortmann
Thanks to the
tremendous support of our Howe family, the 5th
grade was able to exceed their goal for the
Soldier’s Angels Project! We had set a goal for
ourselves to mail ten care packages to our soldiers
in the Middle East. However, because of the great
response, we were able to mail 15 packages! On
Saturday, April 5th, the class got
together with two representatives from the local
Soldier’s Angels group, and packed the boxes. They
contained great items such as food, snacks,
disposable cameras, calling cards, and hygiene
products. We then went to the canteen and had a
delicious pizza lunch. It was wonderful to see a
young group of boys reaching out to help others.
The 5th grade would like to thank all of
the parents, faculty and staff for your support. We
would not have been able to do it without you!!
