College Preparation

All students begin preparing for college by taking the PSAT during their sophomore year and again their junior year. The PSAT allows cadets the opportunity to practice for the real SAT as well as to qualify for National Merit Scholarships.  In the spring of the junior year and the fall of the senior year all or most cadets will take the SAT test, which is given on campus. We assist any students wishing to take the ACT with materials, filling out forms, and at times transportation to get to the testing sites for that test. Students can prepare for the tests by taking on-line versions of the test in guidance or in the barracks. We also have written copies of the test prep materials that cadets may use. The www.CollegeBoard.org website provides a free test-prep module.

The application process begins immediately upon return to Howe Military School in the fall. Students are encouraged to research colleges using the many resources in the guidance office as well as those available on the internet.  The guidance office is fully involved and helps to guide each cadet through the application process.  If cadets are interested in academies, they need to begin that process during their junior year and will be provided with information and assisted in that process. The summer before their senior year is a good time to do college visits, which the guidance office encourages. Cadets are granted two college visit days during their junior year and three visit days during their senior year. It is quite important for the cadets to take the time to visit any college that they may be considering along with their parents, to talk to the admissions staff, and possibly sit in on classes, so that they can get a positive or negative feel for the college.

In the last several years we have had students attend West Point, Annapolis, The University of Illinois, Michigan State University, and many other colleges and universities throughout the United States. The goal of the guidance office is to assist each cadet in choosing the college or career path best suited to his or her interests, abilities, goals, personality, and career aspirations.
