
118th Corp of Cadets
The following are the prescribed duties
for the Cadet Chain of Command at Howe Military School:
BATTALION
COMMANDER
(1)
Commands the Corps of Cadets and is responsible for the performance
of Cadet Officers and the Corps.
(2)
Evaluates the capabilities of cadets for the purpose of promotion
and demotion.
(3)
Serves as President of Sword & Shield.
(4)
Executes such orders and directives as given by the Commandant, SAI,
and Superintendent.
BATTALION
EXECUTIVE OFFICER
(1)
Takes command in the temporary absence of the Battalion Commander.
(2)
Exercises staff supervision of the Cadet Battalion Staff.
(3)
Prepares and updates the Battalion SOP.
(4)
Supervises New Cadet Orientation.
(5)
Executes such orders and directives as given by the Battalion
Commander, Commandant, SAI, and Superintendent.
(6)
Functions as the Battalion Cadet Activities Officer.
(7)
Maintains results of daily marching/drill competition and weekly
inspection results for Honor Company designation.
S-1
- PERSONNEL
(1)
Ensures Battalion Manning Board in the Military Department Building
is kept current.
(2)
Provides accurate rosters for away parades to the Military
Department.
(3)
Prepares narration for parades and ceremonies and designates a
narrator.
(4)
Sets up reviewing stand for all ceremonies, to include seating
diagram, chairs, and P.A. system.
(5)
Functions as the Adjutant during ceremonies.
(6)
Prepares, maintains, and distributes rosters for duty officer/NCO.
(7)
Assists the Military Department with posting and updating of cadet
orders and records.
(8)
Coordinates with Commandant to ensure that cadet identification
cards are processed at the beginning of each semester and during the
school year, as required.
(9)
Serves as Safety Officer for the Corps of Cadets.
(10)
Ensures Company Bulletin Boards are accurate and neat.

- INTELLIGENCE/SECURITY/PUBLIC AFFAIRS
(1)
Ensures security of weapons issue/turn-in.
(2)
Inspects weapon sign-out rosters.
(3)
Inspects arms rooms.
(4)
Assists the SAI on off-campus functions (parades & ceremonies).
(5)
Functions as the Battalion Public Affairs Officer (PAO), unless a
Battalion S-5 is appointed.

- TRAINING
(1)
Ensures training schedules are prepared and posted two weeks in
advance.
(2)
Marks the parade field or gymnasium prior to each ceremony.
(3)
Assists the Operations NCO, Military Department, on other tasks
related to training.
S-4
- SUPPLY
(1)
Assists the Military Property Custodian (MPC) in maintaining cadet
Clothing Records.
(2)
Assists the MPC with equipment and clothing issue/turn-in on the
scheduled days.
(3)
Coordinates supply matters with the Company Supply Sergeants.
(4)
Ensures maintenance of Government issued weapons is being
performed.
(5)
Serves as Food Service Coordinator.
(6)
Responsible for all elements of coordination and execution of cadet
laundry procedures, to include major dry cleaning turn-ins (blankets,
garrison uniforms, rugs, etc.).

- CADET ACTIVITIES /PUBLIC AFFAIRS (WHEN APPOINTED)
(1)
Functions as the Battalion Cadet Activities Officer, (Vice XO).
(2)
Functions as the Battalion Public Affairs Officer, (Vice S-2).
COMMAND
SERGEANT MAJOR
(1)
Functions as the senior representative for all Cadet NCOs in the
Corps.
(2)
Oversees the Cannon Crew, Color Guard, Flag Detail, and trains the
Company Guidon Bearers.
(3)
Announces the daily uniform to the companies, after consulting with
the Battalion Commander and Duty Tactical Officer.
(4)
Makes an overlay for company areas of responsibility for police of
campus.
(5)
Inspects the battalion area daily for police.
(6)
Holds a 1SGs meeting at least once each 6 (six) weeks grading
period.
(7)
Holds NCO calls, as needed.
(8)
Oversees Cadet of the Period/Year Boards and sets up conference
room for General/Special (disciplinary) Boards.
(9)
SETS THE EXAMPLE FOR OTHERS TO FOLLOW!
RESPONSIBILITIES OF COMPANY STAFF
COMPANY COMMANDER
(a)
Responsible for all company personnel (accountability control).
(b)
Ensures company is prepared for training, will arrive at correct
location on time, and is in proper uniform.
(c)
Informs the Executive Officer, Platoon Leaders, and 1SG of
appropriate information pertaining to their duties.
(d)
Inspects the barracks and the company area daily (informal).
(e)
Ensures Cadet Officers and NCOs properly perform their duties.
(f)
Responsible for unit training during performance-oriented training.
(g)
When assigning duties to subordinates, ensures instructions are
clear and concise.
(h)
When a mission has been assigned to a cadet within his command,
follows-up to ensure the mission has been properly accomplished.
(i)
Counsels personnel on all matters of importance. (Remember that a
minor problem to you might be a great one to the underclassman.)
(j)
Has his/her company well groomed, prepared for inspection, and
instills pride within the unit.
(k)
Encourages subordinates to make suggestions.
EXECUTIVE
OFFICER
(a)
Acts as Company Commander in his/her absence.
(b)
Performs CO’s duties as delegated.
(c)
Responsible for supply functions within the Company.
(d)
Responsible for Company Duty Officer roster and assignment.
(e)
Keeps up with administrative duties, demerits, appeals, etc.
(f)
Holds nightly TATTOO formation for cadets to appeal demerits from
the day.
PLATOON LEADER
(a)
Responsible for training the platoon during hands-on training.
(b)
Establishes uniformity of living within the platoon area and
inspects for compliance.
(c)
Informs Platoon Sergeant of details/requirements.
(d)
Has complete knowledge of Rules & Regulations and Battalion SOP and
administers the same properly.
(e)
Knows cadets by-name and how many are assigned to the platoon.
Keeps them informed on all duties to be performed by the platoon. Makes
sure information is passed on to the platoon.
(f)
Is loyal to the Company Commander, School, and subordinates.
(g)
Your standards MUST be of the highest order. YOU MUST SET THE
EXAMPLE! (Appearance, military bearing, military courtesy, etc.) You
must insist that your platoon members meet these standards.
(h)
Inspects rooms and displays of your personnel daily.
(i)
Conducts in-ranks inspection of your personnel daily. (See (3) (g)
above)
(j)
Encourages subordinates to make suggestions.
FIRST
SERGEANT
(a)
Serves as senior non-commissioned officer of the company
(b)
Supervises Platoon Sergeants and subordinates.
(c)
Ensures Cadet NCOs properly perform their functions and duties.
(d)
Advises CO on matters pertinent to the Company.
(e)
Prepares Duty Rosters.
(f)
Prepares Company Personnel Roster.
(g)
Inspects police of Company area to include barracks and enforces
police area responsibility.
(h)
Forms unit for drill, ceremonies and other military/school
formations.
(i)
Receives report of personnel present or absent, and reports number
of absentees to the CO.
(j)
Coordinates/directs unit administration or operation of general
administration.
(k)
Supervises the Company Clerk in the performance of his duties.
(l)
Assists the CO in accomplishing unit training.
(m)
Assists in inspections of company activities as prescribed by the
CO.
(n)
Makes a note of observed discrepancies and initiates appropriate
corrective action in name of CO.
PLATOON
SERGEANT
(a)
Implements Company/Platoon policy on barracks uniformity and
uniform for training.
(b)
Reports cadet absences to 1SG at formations and to the Platoon
Leader.
(c)
Assigns Squads area of police and cleaning.
(d)
Supervises Squad Leaders in the performance of their duties.
(e)
Inspects personnel, their rooms and displays daily.
(f)
Enforces CQ and Taps requirements for the platoon.
(g)
Informs Squad Leaders of Platoon Leaders’ requirements and
guidance.
SQUAD LEADER (SL)
(a)
Carries out duties assigned by company officers and higher NCOs in
the chain of command.
(b)
Responsible for personal appearance and cleanliness of the squad.
(c)
Responsible for accountability of the squad.
(d)
Responsible for preparing squad for inspections.
(e)
Reports all shortages to the Platoon Sergeant.
(f)
Ensure new cadets learn the required New Cadet Knowledge.
(g)
Ensures that all articles of clothing are marked.
(h)
Senior SL takes charge of platoon in PSG absence.
TEAM
LEADER (TL)
(a)
Takes charge of the squad in the absence of the Squad Leader (SL).
(b)
Assists SL in all duties.
HOSPITAL
SERGEANT
(a)
Knows, at all times, when members of the company are in the
infirmary and reports those names to the 1SG.
(b)
Responsible for getting the hospital squad to mess and back to the
company area.
(c)
Ensures cadets in the infirmary receive necessary personal items
when admitted.
(d)
DOES NOT stay with the hospital squad during reviews and parades.
SUPPLY
SERGEANT
(a)
Ensures all cadets turn in laundry on prescribed days. These are
to include one set of sheets and one pillowcase. The sheets and
pillowcase will be carried separately to supply room. When checked by
supply sergeant, the cadet will place items in laundry bag.
(b)
Keeps an account of all laundry turned in by each cadet by
returning a copy of the Laundry Slip. The Laundry Slips will be filed
alphabetically and retained until the laundry has been returned and
checked with each Laundry Slip.
(c)
Checks Laundry Slips to ensure name, laundry number, date, and
company are properly filled out.
(d)
Issues all laundry the same day it is received.
(e)
If any item of clothing is missing upon receipt notifies the T.O.,
CO, and 1SG.
(f)
Inventories barracks property of each room, completing the
Dormitory Report Sheet. Cadets will sign and date this form. After the
Supply Sergeant has signed the form, he gives it to the T.O. Two copies
are made one for the T.O. and one for Supply.
(g)
Inventories each cadet’s clothing issue and completes the shortage
sheet inventory.
(h)
Keeps the 1SG informed of all supply actions. 1SG will inform the
Company Commander and T.O.
COMPANY
ARMORER
(a)
Reads and follows the Physical Security SOP at all times.
(b)
Ensures DA Form 672 is posted on Arms Room door and filled out
properly.
(c)
Ensures key and access roster is posted/covered on the inside of
Arms Room door.
(d)
Maintains a Weapon Receipt Register, FBH Form 22-0-64.
(e)
Ensures all cadets have an assigned weapon.
(f)
Ensures each weapon has a stock number/rack number.
(g)
Repairs weapons, as deemed necessary.
(h)
Issues one weapon at a time.
(i)
Has the cadet properly fill out FBH Form 22-0-64 (Weapon Receipt
Register) to correspond with serial number of weapon. NOTE: Cadet will
print also sign his signature.
(j)
Checks each serial number on all weapons turned in against the
Weapon Receipt Register and, on the respective line, indicates that the
weapon was turned in.
(k)
Have cadets form a single line along the hallway leading to the
Arms Room. There will be no yelling, pushing, fighting, etc. The T.O.
will ensure that there is an officer or 1SG in the Arms Room if he can not
be present.
(l)
Keeps the Arms Room clean and ensures all unassigned weapons are
clean.
COMPANY
CLERK
(a)
Maintains a functional file system.
(b)
Keeps the bulletin board updated.
(c)
Ensures the Commander’s/1SG’s offices are clean at all times.
(d)
If assistance is required coordinates with the 1SG or Company
Commander.
BARRACKS
GUARD DUTY DETAILS
SERGEANT OF THE GUARD (SOG) DUTIES
(1)
Inspects the guards for:
(a)
Fitness and proper uniform
(b)
Haircut
(c)
Boots/ shoes and brass shined
(d)
White belt
(2)
Ensures guards are briefed on telephone procedures:
(a)
Understands transferring incoming calls
(b)
Accepts no “collect calls”
(c)
No cadet will talk on Company pay phones longer than (10) minutes.
Company phones will not be used for personal use.
(3)
1SG will ensure the SOG performs all tasks as stated above, to
include waking up the Guard at 0530 hours.
GUARD
RESPONSIBILITIES
(1)
Be at their post before 0600 hours Monday-Friday and 0700 hours
Saturday and Sunday.
(2)
Remain in “uniform of the day” during entire tour of duty.
(3)
Clear barracks of all cadets after morning school formation, IMs,
chapel, and 3rd mess formations, or when instructed by T.O.
(4)
Remain at their post unless properly relieved by the Sergeant of
the Guard, 1SG, or T.O.
(5)
May read while on guard, but during study hall hours they will
prepare for classes.
(6)
Ensures unauthorized personnel do not enter the barracks.
(7)
Personnel visiting a cadet will be asked to wait in the Lounge.
The cadet being visited will be called on the intercom to report to the
Lounge. All visitors must sign in and out with the Guard. If the T.O. is
not in the barracks, use the chain of command for approval.
(8)
Ensure peace and tranquillity in the barracks. If a problem should
arise that cannot be handled, contact the T.O., CO, XO, or 1SG. If a
fight breaks out, the Guard may use only the force required to break up
the fight. If unable to, call the T.O.
(9)
Maintain a high state of police in the lounge and halls (doors
closed, trash not over-flowing).
(10)
Personnel going to the village of Howe and with parents will sign
out on the “Daily Guard Report”. Cadets leaving campus for a specified
period of time on weekends must have T.O.’s approval.
(11)
Answer all phones. During study hall, callers will be told, “The
cadets are in study hall and are not authorized phone calls until after
2100 hours.” Be very polite, but firm. Emergency calls will be accepted.
(12)
Remember the way you perform you duties has a bearing on the morale
and standards of your fellow cadets and Corps.
(13)
It is the responsibility of each cadet in the chain of command to
know the requirements of all subordinate positions.
(14)
Any deviations from above instructions will result in corrective
actions by the Sergeant of the Guard, 1st Sergeant, XO, CO or T.O. |
