So, what's a RAIDER?

In the tradition of the U.S. Army's Rangers, Howe Military School's JROTC offers a Raiders program for those cadets who want to be better than average. The Army Rangers motto of "Rangers lead the way" also applies to Howe Military School's Raiders.

Cadets entering the Raider program will find themselves busy learning more than in the traditional LET classroom with subjects like survival, map reading and orienteering, first aid, rope bridge building, and rappelling, just to name a few. Though there will be classroom sessions, most of the training takes place outdoors where the techniques learned would be applied in the "real world."

The Raider program is for the dedicated cadet. The training process takes five to six months and finishes off the year with a competition between other schools called the Raider Challenge. Physical fitness training (PT) is essential to being a Raider. PT is done three times a week at 0500. Road marching (or hiking) is part of the PT program. Cadets carry up to 30% of their body-weight.

Even after earning the distinctive beret, the training doesn't stop. Raiders train others who want to become better than the best.

Saturdays are spent training in areas of first aid, rappelling, knot tying, rock climbing, and orienteering. Sometimes, we even get in a bivouac.
