Dr. Brent Smith was appointed Director of Admissions at Howe Military School on July 1, 1999. A native Hoosier, he has served varied roles as an educator. He received a Ph.D. Degree in History and Political Science from Ball State University in 1987. His doctoral dissertation was a biography of Indiana’s first state governor and remains the most comprehensive study to date. He had previously earned a Masters Degree (1976) and a Bachelors Degree (1973) from the University of Indianapolis; both degrees are in Education and history. After 9 years of teaching grades 6-11 in Indiana public schools, Dr. Smith received appointment as Assistant Professor of History/Political Science for the University of Kentucky. For 14 years he was an adjunct college faculty member at 5 different colleges. Prior to his appointment at Howe, Dr. Smith was the chief student affairs administrator at a branch campus of Indiana University and Dean for Enrollment at Marian College. He has presented to many community and scholarly groups including the Indiana Historical Society. He helped edit a college text on the U.S. Constitution and worked on a task force to improve university classroom teaching. He has held leadership roles in several professional organizations; administered 2 grants funded by the Lilly Endowment and has been an on-air TV political commentator for a CBS affiliate station. Dr. Smith has also served on an elected public school board. Dr Smith is a member of Phi Alpha Theta (honor society in history) and Pi Gamma Mu (honor society in social science).
